Every story needs a home…
I'm Pip Cox, an artist, writer and bookmaker. I make books by hand, from the paper they're made from to the words and images they hold.
My journey into bookmaking began with a story of my own.
For years, I wanted to see my writing in print. I sent stories out into the world, hoping someone else would give them a home. After plenty of submissions, a lot of waiting and rejections, I began to wonder what would happen if I stopped waiting for permission and made the book myself.
So I did.
I began making my own paper from recycled materials, foraging for ingredients to make natural ink, writing and illustrating by hand, carving lino prints, marbling paper, and learning the craft of bookbinding. What began as a way of bringing one story to life slowly became a whole new way of looking at things.
Making a book by hand changed the way I thought about stories. A book is no longer just words on a page. It can be something you hold, make, alter, keep, and pass on. The materials, marks, and imperfections become part of the story too.
That idea is at the heart of my work: every story needs a home.
Sometimes that home is a handmade book. Sometimes it's a notebook waiting for its first words, a lino print, a workshop, or a journal giving someone else's work a place in the world.
Alongside my own writing and artwork, I run creative workshops where children and adults can explore papermaking, printmaking, bookbinding, and other book arts. I love sharing the processes behind books and giving people the chance to make something that is entirely their own.
I still make books from paper that might otherwise be thrown away, but for me the story is bigger than recycling. It's about slowing down, making things with our hands, and giving ideas the time and space to become something real. To finally give them a home.
